After many years of taking photographs in different places, I started creating small zines with my photographic work. Here, you can explore my work, and if you’re interested in getting one, feel free to contact me directly at juan.cofre.y@gmail.com

VALPARAISO

$15 cad

68 pages – Valparaiso, Chile

I arrived in Valparaíso in 2008 to study Filmmaking, and I had never seen anything like it before. No one had enough words to describe one of the most indescribable cities I’ve had the pleasure of exploring and living in. Its streets, houses, people, and the sea recreated for me a past era, a world I had only heard of, seen in movies, and photographs. In Valparaiso, many things are hidden at plain sight, and others hidden deep inside the houses scattered across the hills. This black-and-white photographic work, shot in 35mm, shows what I found in the port during four years

of casually going out to see what I could discover, or what might discover me.

CUBA

$20 cad

60 pages – La Havana – San Antonio, Cuba

I arrived in Cuba in June 2016 to pursue a specialization in documentary filmmaking at the International School of Film and TV, San Antonio de los Baños. My stay lasted for a month, and these are the photographs I took during the weekends when I escaped to Havana and San Antonio. During my first moments walking through the streets of Havana, the faces and social interactions were what attracted me the most. Many of the things I saw reminded me of my childhood in my home country. Cuba retains that essence where socializing in public spaces is a natural part of everyday life. It is one of the few countries where smartphones were scarce and hyperconnectivity was not widespread. Not only do the buildings and cars reflect a time frozen, but the interactions among people create a unique social atmosphere, which in many countries has become a thing of the past.
